NDG Run Rite Athletics Club Celebrates Running as a Cultural Gathering in Montreal
Founded in Montreal in September 2017, NDG Run Rite Athletics Club grew out of a simple but powerful idea by href="https://www.instagram.com/jeremytaylorbresnen" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Jeremy, co-founder and lead designer of the local apparel brand Ciele Athletics. Motivated to build a community beyond just commerce, Jeremy reached out to local running leaders to organize free weekly runs from Ciele’s studio in the Notre-Dame-de-Grace neighborhood. The founding team included Butch, Lecia (formerly co-captain of East Laurier Running Club), P-A, (co-captain of Yamajo Run Crew), and Martin, an ultrarunner known for his adventurous spirit. Together, they built a crew that represents the vibrancy and inclusiveness of NDG, a lively west-end neighborhood of Montreal.
Running with Open Minds and Good Company
The crew follows a philosophy that goes beyond just training and timing. Their pace varies widely, offering an inviting pace for runners of all skill levels. Their motto focuses on camaraderie and creativity, encouraging even “bad ideas" as part of the experience. Running serves as the glue, but the real connection comes from a shared dedication to open-mindedness and promoting running as a cultural activity, not just a sport. This mindset invites runners to socialize and stay active, combining athleticism with a relaxed, inclusive atmosphere.
A Diverse Group Driven by a Common Passion
With approximately 30 members, NDG Run Rite Athletics Club is a small yet close-knit group. Members come from various backgrounds and experience levels, united by a shared passion for running and community. The atmosphere is informal and energetic, often filled with humor and social moments that extend beyond the runs themselves. The team’s personality reflects Montreal’s diverse and creative spirit, fostering friendships that go beyond just running miles.
Thursday Night Runs at Ciele HQ
Every Thursday at 7 pm, the crew meets at Ciele’s headquarters for an 8 to 12-mile run. The route features some hills and a short trail segment, offering a good mix of terrain. These runs are the core of the crew’s weekly activities, open to anyone nearby interested in joining. The combination of structured gatherings and a friendly, welcoming attitude makes these runs a favorite among local runners seeking both challenge and community.
Everyone Welcome to Explore and Connect
NDG Run Rite Athletics Club warmly invites newcomers to join without hesitation. There are no membership fees, and runners of all paces and abilities are welcome. The simple message is: come as you are, share a run, and become part of a community that values connection just as much as performance. Communication and coordination mainly happen through social media channels linked to Ciele Athletics and the founding members.

Montreal’s Dynamic Urban Environment
Known for its multicultural vibrancy, artistic spirit, and historic neighborhoods, Montreal offers a lively backdrop for the crew’s activities. The city’s bustling streets, parks, and community atmosphere energize the runs. NDG itself is a residential neighborhood with tree-lined streets and a welcoming urban vibe, balancing city life with access to nature.
Trails and Hills That Shape the Runs
The weekly routes feature NDG’s diverse terrain, including hills that challenge endurance and a short trail section that provides a glimpse of Montreal’s natural spaces within the city. These runs often go through local parks and residential streets, allowing members to experience the neighborhood’s character at a relaxed pace. Combining pavement and trail keeps the runs lively and engaging.
Participating in Montreal’s Annual Running Events
While NDG Run Rite mainly focuses on weekly gatherings, the city’s schedule is full of races that members frequently participate in. Events like the Montreal Marathon and various local road and trail races provide opportunities to connect with the broader running community. With roots in NDG and close relationships with local leaders, the group remains engaged with Montreal’s lively running scene throughout the year.
