Crew at a Glance

Jukueja Runners is one of the oldest and most culturally important running communities in Makassar, Indonesia. Founded in January 2012, they are a pioneering group dedicated to blending the modern sport of running with a unique "nuance of local wisdom." Their name itself pays homage to the city's heritage. As a community open to everyone, they have played a key role in cultivating a running culture that is genuinely and proudly connected to its local environment.

Jukueja Runners: Sharing Local Wisdom on the Streets of Makassar

In January 2012, a new running movement started in the historic port city of Makassar. Jukueja Runners was established as a community with a special goal: to bring a touch of local wisdom to the growing sport of running. They have since become a key part of the city's running scene, successfully creating a platform that is open to everyone and deeply connected to their local culture.

The philosophy of Jukueja Runners is to be more than just a running group; it is a vessel for the local culture. Their name, "Jukueja," is a reference to a historic name for their home city, connecting them directly to the deep heritage of Makassar. This principle guides a community that values its local identity and seeks to share that wisdom with everyone who runs with them. They have created a welcoming and authentic space for runners of all backgrounds.

The culture of Jukueja Runners centers on exploring their city and sharing its stories. Their group runs serve as mobile celebrations of Makassar, guiding members through its historic streets and along its beautiful waterfront. These regular gatherings are the heart of their community, offering a consistent opportunity for people to connect with their city and with each other in a positive and healthy way.

True to their philosophy, Jukueja Runners is a community that welcomes everyone. They warmly invite any runner in Makassar, whether a local or a visitor, who wants to experience the city's unique culture on foot. To join their journey and connect with the community, we encourage you to follow their official social media channels.

The Makassar Running Scene

As one of the city's pioneering running groups, Jukueja Runners helped establish a lively local running scene. They share the streets with other passionate groups, including the city's first self-proclaimed urban running crew, the fun-loving South Side Run Crew (SSRC). Together, these groups have built a strong and supportive community for runners in the South Sulawesi capital.

The city of Makassar is a historic port and the lively capital of South Sulawesi province in Indonesia. From my current location in Croatia, the idea of this vibrant Southeast Asian port city is captivating. Makassar is a major hub in eastern Indonesia, known for its diverse culinary scene and beautiful waterfront sunsets. This special mix of history and coastal scenery offers a fantastic backdrop for its enthusiastic running community.

The runners of Makassar have a beautiful and historic landscape to explore. A favorite route for the entire city's running community is the famous Losari Beach waterfront promenade, which is a spectacular place to run and enjoy the sea breeze. Their runs also undoubtedly include the area around the historic Dutch colonial-era Fort Rotterdam, a key landmark in the city. The top racing event in the city is the Makassar Marathon, which offers several distances and takes participants on a scenic tour of the city and its coastline, providing a major goal for the local running community.
