The 442 Crew: Running Across Borders, Building a Future

In a region with a turbulent history, two running crews decided to forge a different future. The 442 Crew is a joint identity of the Belgrade Urban Running Team (BURT) and Zagreb Runners, two of the most prominent crews in the Balkans. Rather than dwelling on the past conflicts that divided their home countries of Serbia and Croatia, they found a shared vision. They recognized their common passion for running, their desire for a brighter future, and their opposition to divisive politics as powerful enough to build bridges—one step at a time.

The philosophy of the 442 Crew is captured in their own words: "We had a troubled past, but we're focusing on a future full of miles and smiles." The name itself, 442, represents the symbolic distance in kilometers between Belgrade and Zagreb, turning a measure of separation into a badge of unity. This initiative is a core part of the global Bridge The Gap (BTG) movement, which uses sport to fight nationalism and xenophobia. By running together, members of BURT and Zagreb Runners actively challenge prejudice and promote a message of inclusivity, acceptance, and mutual respect that goes well beyond the pavement.

The partnership between Belgrade Urban Running Team and Zagreb Runners embodies the spirit of the 442 Crew. It is most evident when they travel together to international races, from the New York City Marathon to the Barcelona Marathon. In these moments, they cease to be two separate crews and become one cohesive force, leaving their mark on global events through their shared passion and dedication. Their journey shows that running can, and will, bridge political divides, fostering lasting connections across cultures, languages, and backgrounds.

While the crew’s spirit remains unified, their regular activities are rooted in their respective home cities. In Belgrade, BURT often organizes refreshing morning runs along the Danube River, offering stunning views of the iconic Kalemegdan Fortress. In Zagreb, the Zagreb Runners weave through the city's charming neighborhoods, passing landmarks like the impressive Zagreb Cathedral and the lively Dolac Market. In both cities, runners of all skill levels are welcomed with open arms, encouraged to join in the camaraderie and shared love for the sport.

The 442 Crew is not a formal, separate entity to join, but a shared identity. To be part of this movement is to join one of its founding pillars: the Belgrade Urban Running Team in Belgrade or the Zagreb Runners in Zagreb. Both crews are open to new members, inviting anyone who shares their love for running and belief in building community to join their regular runs.
